FOG Flashback 6/14/1999, The night both Gerlitz's stormed off
As far as the recap goes, the game was called due to the other squad failing to read the small print of this years roster requirements, 5 just won't cut it any more. Yet as soon as the game was called both Gerlitzs aka G2 took off. The team was a bit surprised by their quick departure until Coach Boyd reminded us the Joe had to get back to the Felicity Marathon and that Mikey G had to feed their dog Harley balls.
But since we had the time and the field we challenged the other squad to a little game and though some didn't take it very seriously (Nolte) Coach Boyd brought out the leather like it was some kinky S & M event. First a diving catch, then hustling to double up a runner at first and then finally combining with right fielder Matt Cook to throw out a runner at first from the outfield on a would be single. Never mind he went 6-7. Mukai also brought out the whooping stick, driving in 38 runs with 5 extra base hits a new Fog record). Unfortunately some things don't change, Nolte once again struggled at the plate, going 2-9 and was lit up as the pitcher.
But the player of the game, had to be Steve Boyd #21
FOG Flashback 7/15/1999, Graeme's first game
AP Seattle, WA
Last night the Fog were scheduled to play at 6.30 only to face yet another team that had to forfeit, this league is freaking ghetto trash.
Note pitching on 27 years rest found a little groove and other than a ball that was drilled to left center, the score keeper wasn't sure if it was a 4 base error on Mikey G or a Home Run, Note didn't give up any other hits. The defense backed him with errorless ball, and for once Note's batting wasn't an issue, because he hit like a pitcher.
The Fog were also a little shorthanded. Normal shortstop, Joe "The Freaking Laser" Gerlitz, was sitting out his one game suspension for not wearing underwear in the previous game and the whereabouts of Cook are still unknown. But a risky move by the Fog proved genius. The Fog activated 1st round draft pick Graeme Hansen from their single A affiliate, Castle Rock Dung Slingers, and he had an amazing game in the field, he had a hard time adjusting to the mush ball, but that was to be anticipated hence the low batting spot.
Next week the Fog look forward to the return of Joey G, and fantasy owners will have to wait till game time to see if Graeme is still in the line up or shagging flies for the Dung Slingers.
FOG turn back the clock 7/29/99, Last Game at SPU & with Mikey G
Seattle, WA - AP
The Fog lost in the championship game. Hatted rivals 318 beat them 8-1 to win their second championship in 9 years. The Fog was playing in their third straight championship and we going for the threepeat.
It was a long day for The Fog. In their earlier game they had to work much harder than they had expected. Facing a team that had forfeited to them twice the Fog expected to coast into the championship, but that wasn't the case. Down 4-3 they rallied back to take a 12-4 lead only to see the game tied at the end of six, after taking a one run lead into the bottom of the seventh, the other team immediately put two runners on without any outs, but a critical double play, Nolte to the bag at third to Darin at first, really took the wind out of their sales, the next batter, grounded out to Joey and it was time to play for t-shirts.
Maybe it was the fact that The Fog played a long hard first game in the sun and were drained or maybe the mush ball god finally caught up with them, either way they couldn't hit, their lone run coming after Nolte had walked, advanced to second on a grounder and scored on a shallow single. The 318 used small ball to return to the promised land, singles and advancing runners was the name of their game, and the end of the game was only fitting. Leadoff hitter, Eric Jimmy Dean Nolte, was up with two outs and had already walked twice, but it was obvious that the opposing pitcher had gained a second wind by starting him out strike one, after a ball, Nolte fouled off a pitch, then a ball, then the pitch that would end The Fog was thrown. It floated to the plate like a big ham sandwich, it was meant to be hit into play, hit to a defense that had played an errorless game, hit hoping that it would make an out, but then it happened, Nolte swung and missed. Mighty Nolte (Casey) had struck out.
After the first game, Mikey G confided in me that that was the first time he was ever nervous that we might actually lose a softball game, he said it was weird and needed a hug, I wasn't sure if he was serious or wanted to touch me but I hugged him.
The highlight of the evening occurred in the first game when a runner attempted to score from second on a single, Mikey G loaded his howitzer and fired a strike to Boyd who applied a great tag on the diving runner.
The lowlights of the game, how about Watson being 0-7 with a walk or that Watson and Mukai had all the canal duty for the championship game. It is over, The Fog will never play another game at SPU, and I for one have to say thank goodness. Next year The Fog will move into a real summer softball league with actual balls and real infields.
